“Hospice treats volunteers like family”

I never thought I would be volunteering this long with an organization like Hospice of Redmond, but I love what I do and the support of this whole family. Twenty-six years ago, I began volunteering at Hospice of Redmond, before they were in this building! I’ve seen many changes over the years, from new Executive Directors, to new buildings, a new name, and I’ve witnessed the growth in our volunteer force and staff.   When you’re with an organization for this long, you get to know the team and purpose extremely well, and our purpose is supporting families in their most trying times. Over the years, while I have witnessed significant changes within the hospice community, one thing remains the same.

Hospice of Redmond was there for me when my husband passed; everyone here is a family, and provides a wonderful support system, not only to other staff but also to the patients in our care, they become part of our family too. Currently, I oversee the nurses’ books and create packets for patients, ensuring medical records are properly filed and have the appropriate paperwork in them. I’ve held a variety of jobs as a volunteer, but I love working with our clinical team, interfacing with the nurses and supporting their mission. Twenty-six years ago, we did it all. Today, we have over 70 volunteers who serve in many different capacities. We have volunteers who focus solely on visiting patients, volunteers who support the receptionist and administration, volunteers who do pet therapy, volunteers who are on call on weekends in the event nurses need support. It is incredible to watch the team come together to support Hospice of Redmond.

While not originally from Central Oregon, I’ve lived here since 1961 and have been a resident of Redmond since 1987. People talk about the growth in our community, and I’ve seen it first-hand. It’s wonderful to be part of an organization so keen on supporting families in the community and truly serving in the most selfless way. Hospice of Redmond is always looking for people who want to serve, and no matter your time or talents, we will work with you. No matter your role supporting Hospice of Redmond, the power of your presence can change a life.
