Our Mission

To enhance the quality of life for patients and families by providing the highest level of compassionate hospice care and bereavement services for our Central Oregon community.

Our History

It began when a local nurse asked a friend to help care for her husband who did not want to go the the local hospital in his final days. The friend had studied end-of-life care in medical school in the 1960s and had visited the first hospice, St. Christopher’s in London. After the nurse’s husband passed, it was obvious that there was a need for an alternative to dying in the hospital in Central Oregon.

A meeting by community members including surgeon Dr. Marinus Koning, the Director of the Central Oregon Community Action Agency Network, and the Director of Nursing at Central Oregon Community Hospital resulted in the beginnings of Hospice of Redmond in 1979. Hospice began providing quality end-of-life care as an all-volunteer agency serving just six patients per month.

In 1981, Hospice of Redmond became a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization and since then has touched the lives of hundreds of individuals in Central Oregon. It is an independent and Medicare-certified organization that has served the Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties including Redmond, Bend, Sisters, Tumalo, Powell Butte, Prineville, Terrebonne, Crooked River Ranch, Madras, and surrounding areas.

Many of our patient’s come to us through personal referrals because of our long-standing commitment to our community. This commitment along with the highest quality training of our clinical staff and volunteer group makes Hospice of Redmond the first choice for quality end-of-life care in the area.

Today, Hospice employs more than 20 staff members. It provides end-of-life-related services through direct Hospice service, a Transitions program, and bereavement counseling.

The Hospice team has made a difference in the lives of patients and families facing a terminal illness by assisting them with their own unique physical, emotional and spiritual needs. The clinical staff uses various methods of symptom management and pain control creating a holistic approach which allows the patient to remain as active and in control of their lives as possible. It has a dedicated team working on behalf of the patient and their family including physicians, registered nurses, licensed therapists, social workers, and hospice aides, along with spiritual and bereavement counselors.
